Tender Is the Night by F. Scott Fitzgerald

Tender Is the NightTender Is the Night by F. Scott Fitzgerald
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

It took two attempts for me to finish this book. The first time I lost interest in the beginning. The second time, I lost interest half-way through and finished it anyway. There's a lot of great writing and I was somewhat engaged in the female characters, but Dick always seemed lacking somehow, and that feeling just increased. I also wasn't interested in the meandering plot. So this was not the most enjoyable read for me.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button by F. Scott Fitzgerald

The Curious Case of Benjamin ButtonThe Curious Case of Benjamin Button by F. Scott Fitzgerald
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This story is so magical and moving. The story deals with so many interesting things. Benjamin suffers so much judgment based on his appearance from both those who don't understand him and even those in his family that do. I am not certain what to think about his family's uniform but peculiar reaction of blaming him for something he can't help. There are so many things about his life cycle that aren't different despite the inversion because babyhood and extreme old age have some things in common. In any case, the story gives you a lot to think about. The end of the story really rips your heart out though.

The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald

The Great GatsbyThe Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I reread this novel for maybe the 4th or 5th time because many people I respect in these matters love this book. Maybe because I read Kevin's copy that is both underlined and highlighted- not sure what the code there was- but I finally appreciate this book a lot more.

Appreciating how well-written the novel is, and liking it, are not exactly the same thing. In fact, now that I appreciate the deeper thoughts behind the action of the story, I find this novel deeply depressing. In this worldview, even if people were better behaved, I suspect they'd still be terribly unhappy. Well, maybe that's right.
