I honestly don’t know if I liked this or not. It felt very incomplete and rather than feeling like it was about a very fair and rule-based world, it felt very arbitrary. Possibly 2 stars. The first book has been, and remains, my favorite. In other words, the school from book one seems better to me than the worlds that the children prefer.

This isn't a 4-star book on its own, it's 4-stars as a good third book in a series that makes you like everything that came before it even better. Without the darker first two books, this one would seem unbearably silly. With them, this one is a bit of a relief. This one introduced a new character Cora who I didn't love. I was more interested in the characters we already knew, and Cora didn't interest me as much. I'm hoping there will be a fourth, darker book about one of the other characters we already know.

Fun YA-fantasy-horror book. More consistently good than the first one of the Wayward Children series. The main thing I find problematic with both in the series is the inexplicable way otherwise fairly normal people turn to murder without much compunction. That doesn't seem realistic to me. I get that the whole thing isn't realistic because it's a fantasy novel but I do still expect the characters to behave like actual people.

I loved the beginning. It was a 5-star beginning with great characters, and an old but beloved premise- doors to magical worlds! But as the mystery aspect of the book takes off it devolves into a 3-star ending. So I averaged the two ratings.
